Acting President to be announced later today.
It has been reported that the ANC will announce the acting President later today.Everyone is waiting with baited breath to see who it will be.
While many people were not surprised by this weekends dramatic political events the average South African is probably rather distressed and uneasy. After the ANC announced its decision to recall President Thabo Mbeki on Saturday he delivered his resignation on Sunday evening.
The President did step down in a gracious manner and expressed confidence in the administration to follow. This did not stop him from professing his innocence regarding allegations that he has interfered in Jacob Zuma’s legal issue’s for his own political gain.At this stage it seems the Deputy President may or may not resign. If the Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka does resign the ANC will have to appoint another member to fill the position in the interim.Finance Minister Trevor Manuel is reportedly going to stay and retain his position into the next administration.
It seems as though the experts are advising against a panic reaction to the news. While it has very serious implications for the country it did not come as a surprise to major investors and the financial sector. What is a concern is future foreign investor confidence in the country and the far reaching implications this will have, especially with 2010 drawing closer.
The question’s to be answered are who will succeed the President and what does this radical move mean for South Africa’s people and economy. After the financially tumultuous last year due to the interest rate ,and other factors, how much more can South Africa take.
How will this effect us all and will we survive yet another financial upheaval. We as South Africans are a resilient people and have weathered many storms and we will surely survive many more in the future.
