We are all aware of the on-going legal battles of ANC president Jacob Zuma.Something that added fuel to the recent fire was a rumour that the ANC wanted to amend the South African constitution to reflect that a President couldn’t stand trial for something.
The ANC and the ANCYL have both stated that this is completely untrue and they would never change the constitution to suit one particular individuals situation.
The ANCYL did however say they would prefer the charges be postponed until after the election so that Mr Zuma could enjoy a trouble free run-up to the election.
The ANC’s refusal to attempt to alter the constitution will increase the party’s respectability at home and abroad.A move to change the constitution to suit the ruling party’s presidential candidate would likely tarnish South Africa’s reputation of having a free and democratic electoral system.
It seems the ANC is attempting to keep all activities at this point relating to Mr Zuma as transparent and unquestionable as possible.
