President elect Barack Obama will inaugurated today as America’s first non-white president.He has enjoyed astounding popularity coming from voters of all races, and is seen by some as the 21st centuries equivalent of the late Pres.Kennedy due to his charisma and youth.
Outgoing President George Bush has praised Obama and has said he hopes the new president will enjoy a less controversial presidency than his own.Obama inherits a presidency that has many serious issues that need to be addressed, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the worst financial crisis the US has faced since the Great Depression.
The majority of the globe views the election of a non-white President as a great event and step forward in race relations. America’s non-white population is very much in the minority, which highlights Obama’s popularity even more.
The inauguration will be broadcast on South African radio and television between 6pm and 8:30pm tonight. It will surely be an event to remember.
