Will the ANC split?
The in-fighting within the ANC has not yet come to an end.Rumors persist that the party may lose many members to a breakaway party that may be led by former Minister of Defence Mosioua Lekota.
The ANC does not seem to be encouraging unity either ,they are instead saying they will face any opposition with the full might of their public support at the polls next year. However some sources from within the ANC have said they are concerned about the detrimental effects the recalling of Thabo Mbeki has had on party support.
Many South Africans were unhappy about the presidential recall, other factors that support the possiblity of a breakaway party are the resignation of Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa and Mr Lekota’s open letter to the ANC criticizing their departure from the ideals set out in the Freedom Charter.
It will be a huge task if some do decide to run against the ruling party, due to lack of the time they have to prepare for the election next year. However there may be more angry and discontent South Africans than the ANC is aware of and they may have a some serious competition next year.
