Creating a good first impression is very important because they do stick in people’s minds. If your home has been stagnating on the property market for months for no obvious reason you may want to look into the psychology of colour. This sounds pretty weird to most people but colour and the way it effects a persons mood has been studied for years with some interesting results.
Perhaps your entrance hall has been painted a colour that immediately puts people off because it makes people feel sad or depressed. All it takes is a bit of basic investigation to get you on the right track. The following is a list of colours and the observed effects they have on people.
- Green: It’s supposed to have a soothing, calming effect on people and is strongly associated with nature and the outdoors. Many people will choose this calming colour for their bedrooms as it should make the room feel even more relaxing.
- Blue: Is associated with peace, conservatism and reliability. It is often used in office environments for this reason. However when using blue in a room one should keep in mind that it has also been observed to make people feel depressed, so choose your shade carefully and perhaps combine it with a more vibrant colour.
- Red: Is associated with danger, desire and love, it has the ability to increase the heart rate and blood pressure. It is most often used in rooms that people entertain in, like a dining room, because of it’s vibrancy and warmth.
- Yellow: It makes people feel optimistic, joyful and full of hope. This would be a great colour to paint the room you have breakfast in so that you start the day out feeling happy. On the other side of the spectrum yellow is also associated with cowardice and illness, probably not a good colour for your bedroom.
- Purple: This colour is associated with nobility, mystery and royalty. If you want a room to feel luxurious and opulent some purple accents may just do the trick.
- White: Represents purity, cleanliness and peace. It is most often used in rooms where these qualities are important like the bathroom or the bedroom but if you want to add a peaceful air to your living room you could use white in combination with other neutral colours to put people at ease.
We all like to make our homes our own but it will be easier to sell your property if people feel at ease and comfortable in theĀ space they are in. Take a step back and ask a few friends what they think of your colour choice and whether or not it could be improved upon to encourage a sale, even if it means painting everything white.
